Year 2 - Flamingos

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to Year 2

We hope that you all had a wonderful summer and that your child is looking forward to their time in Year 2.

The purpose of this letter is to inform you of the topic areas we will be looking at this year and to let you know of some further arrangements.

We have a lot of exciting work planned, and where possible our learning across the curriculum will be linked to the following topic areas throughout the year:

  • Florence Nightingale and Keeping Healthy
  • Author/Book Study
  • Minibeasts
  • Let’s make great art!
  • Islands/Under the sea

… and one more topic to be decided at a later date!

We have also included a general timetable, so that the children come to school properly equipped each day.

Reading

The children will continue to bring home a copy of their current RWI book (if applicable at their stage of the RWI scheme) and another reading book from a range of schemes.  The RWI book will be their primary (main) book and will be changed when your child’s RWI group moves onto the next book.  Just to remind you, in each RWI book, there is a Speed Sound Chart, lists of Green words (those that can be sounded out) and Red Words (‘tricky’ words) and a Speed Word Game, all of which can be read and played with your child.  Your child will also have an opportunity to change their secondary reading book three times a week on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We ask that you sign in the reading diary to say when either book has been read, and record any comments that you might wish to make.

The children will also have the opportunity to choose a book from our school library, usually on a Tuesday, which they will be able to bring home. This will need to be returned to school the following week in order to choose a new book

Spelling

The children will continue to have spellings to learn within the Read Write Inc scheme.  They will also have an extra weekly test in school, on a Wednesday.  Initially, these spellings will be taken from the Year 1 and 2 Common Exception words, 5 of which will be learned and tested each week.  We will then begin to learn and test words following different Spelling Rules, in addition to the exception words (taking us up to 10 words each week).  Each week, the spelling words will be clearly written for your child on a spelling practice sheet.  This sheet does not need to come back to school; it is for them to use at home.  The children will then be tested on the following Wednesday; and so that you know how well your child is doing, we will send home the Spelling Book each week.  We just ask that you make sure it is returned each week, please, ready for the next spelling test!

Mental Maths and Times Tables

Initially, the children will continue with the Big Maths scheme in class (obviously, at a Year 2 level); this is a timed mental maths activity, twice a week.  In Year 1, all the children made great progress in their accuracy and speed; we are sure this will continue this year!  To support them with their mental maths, any extra practise at home would be very beneficial (number bonds to 10, 20 and 100; counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, moving onto learning these in a times table form: 1x2=2, 2x2=4, etc).  Later in the year, we will also start to practise and formally test the times tables (starting with the 2s, 10s and 5s).

Be Proud!

Last year, lots of the children were very eager to show off the extra work they were doing at home; we are very keen for them to continue to do this again…our ‘Proud’ board is waiting!

Forest Schools

We are fortunate to be able to offer Year 2 the fantastic opportunity of taking part in Forest Schools again this year. Year 2 will visit the forest on alternate Wednesday afternoons and the dates for the Autumn term are set out below.

Wednesday 27th September

Wednesday 11th October

Wednesday 1st November

Wednesday 15th November

Wednesday 29th November

Monday 18th December (Carols in the Forest).

As in Year 1, the children may come to school in suitable ‘own clothes’ on their Forest School day, bringing their waterproofs, wellies, and any extra layers needed in a bag (all clearly named please).

We will do our best to go to the forest on each of these dates, but as we know from experience, the weather can sometimes be a little unkind and some changes/cancellations may be unavoidable (for example, if it is very windy, it is unsafe to go to the forest).  We may, however, decide to work on the field instead, so therefore, please send in all Forest school clothing irrespective of the weather!  We thank you for your understanding with this!

Other events

We are excited to offer a wonderful visit from Miss Florence Nightingale as a culmination of our topic on Tuesday 31st October (details to follow). This is a brilliant visit from the renowned ‘Florence Nightingale Museum’ in London. We will be asking for a voluntary contribution for this which will be approximately £9 (more details to follow). The children will get a lot out of this experience and have access to wonderful resources.

As soon as we have organised other fabulous trips/events for the rest of the year, we will let you know!

‘Meet the Teacher’

To work alongside this letter, we have arranged a ‘Meet the Teacher’ session for each class.  For Years 1 and 2, this will be on Thursday 28th September, at 3:30pm, in our classrooms (once all children have been collected from the ‘Walkers’ lines).  Please come along and ‘meet’ me (again!), bringing with you any questions you may have…or just to say hello!

Thank you in advance for your support. We are all thrilled to be working with your child again this year and we hope that this will be another very happy, fun and successful year!

With many thanks,

Mrs Rigby and Mrs Heywood
