Year 3 - Puffins
We hope you all had a good summer and that your children are looking forward to the year ahead in Year 3. The purpose of this letter is to briefly outline the range of activities we have planned for the year, as well as to highlight some key timetable points that you should be aware of.
During the first half of the Autumn Term, we will be learning about Medieval Britain focussing on the theme of castles and knights. To enhance our learning of this topic we have arranged a visit to The Tower of London on Tuesday 10th October. After half term our topic will be Roald Dahl where we will be exploring a variety of his books.
In the first half of the Spring Term, we will be learning all about rainforests and habitats. We will have the chance to explore different kinds of habitats that exist, as well as investigating more closely some of the plant and animal habitats that are situated on our school site.
When we return after the February half term we have an exciting new topic planned where the children will have the opportunity to put together a production. They will be making props, acting, singing, dancing, producing and having lots of fun on the way. We are really excited to see the final performance!
In the first half of the summer we will be doing a whole school topic ‘Let’s Make Art.’ In this topic we will be looking at different artists and exploring different techniques and tools to recreate famous pieces of art.
For our final topic we will be exploring the Mayan culture, with a focus of chocolate! We’re not going to say too much now but we are sure it will be a fantastic way to end the year!
Now that your children have moved into KS2 they will now receive learning logs. The idea around learning logs is to give the children a creative challenge to complete over a two week period. The learning logs have been a huge success and we have been amazed by the originality and creativity of the children. It is always so exciting to see and celebrate what they have put together over the two weeks.
The children will also bring home a reading book which can be changed when needed. It is expected that children should read daily at home and that they log what they have read in their new Reading Diaries. Parents should continue to sign their child’s Reading Diaries to acknowledge this. They will also be checked and signed by an adult in school every Friday. Children will also have the opportunity to take a book out of our school library.
Spellings will be given out on a Friday and tested the following Friday. All spellings will be from the Year 3 National Curriculum. The children might find this quite a big step up from the KS1 spelling list however in school we will be providing additional spelling activities and support to help bridge this gap.
Puffins – Monday and Wednesday
Owls – Tuesday and Wednesday
Please ensure your child has a full outdoor and indoor kit, and dark jogging bottoms are advised for later in the term as the weather gets colder.
We hope your child is happy and enjoying being in year 3 and I look forward to discussing their progress with you during parent consultations in October. However, if you ever have any questions or something you wish to discuss before then, please do not hesitate to contact us via the office. We’re looking forward to meeting you all on our meet the teacher session on Thursday 28th September.
