Effort Cup Assembly Spring 1 Term

Breakfast Clubs

The Government has announced a new initiative to launch breakfast clubs in all primary schools. Government Breakfast Clubs are different to wrap around childcare that is currently provided by JAM. Breakfast Clubs are solely there to provide children with breakfast each morning. Every child is entitled to access this service.

Rodings has been selected by the Department of Education (DfE) to pilot this initiative from the summer term 2025 before the programme is rolled out nationally in 2026. As each school is different, the DfE has left it to schools to design what service will look like. One of the main stipulations is that breakfast is available for a 30minute window before school.

We are in the very early stages of planning the provision for Rodings. To help us make a more informed decision about what we will need to provide and for how many children, please could you fill in the following questionnaire. The more responses we have the better we can make the initial provision.

We will also be taking into account the impact this will have on JAM, home to school transport and staffing.

Once the questionnaire has closed we will share more information about how Breakfast club will run. The deadline is Friday 28th February.

Spelling Shed

We have noticed that many children no longer seem to be using Spelling Shed at home. We can see that those children who are regularly playing on Spelling Shed are retaining those words and spelling them correctly across their writing in school. To support this, we would ask you to encourage your child to use Spelling Shed regularly at home and we have relaunched the Spelling Shed leader board in assemblies to help motivate and reward the children. Class teachers will be regularly updating the spelling lists to reflect teaching in class and so Spelling Shed remains the most current means of reinforcing spellings taught in school.

Book Week is just around the corner and we have some exciting things planned!

We are launching a 'Book in Jar' competition where your challenge is to choose one of your favourite books and represent it in a jam jar/mason jar. For anyone who would like to take part could you ensure that your jars are returned to your class teachers by Wednesday 5th March.

On Wednesday 5th March we will also be holding a book swap. We would like your child to bring a book that they've read and no longer want ready to exchange it with someone.

On Thursday 6th March we would love for you to come dressed up as your favourite book character for World Book Day.

On Friday 7th March in the afternoon we will be having 'bedtime stories' where the children can bring their pyjamas/slippers/teddy ready to enjoy a story and a hot chocolate.

On Wednesday afternoon the School Parliament ran the Toy Bring and Buy Sale. The event was a resounding success with every child in the school able to choose a toy. We have raised over £260 and the Parliamentarians will meet after half term to decide how to spend this money.

The School Parliament would like to thank all the families who, so kindly, donated toys. We had a few left over which have been given to a local charity shop.

This week, Rodings joined others nationwide to celebrate Safer Internet Day 2025, the largest global online safety campaign. This year's theme, ‘Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online’, teaches children and young people how to identify and avoid scams, and highlights available support.

Scams can take many forms and target anyone, including young people. You may think that your child would be able to spot an online scammer, but the truth is that they are incredibly convincing and hard to spot. They often involve fake profiles and identities to target people: you may have heard this referred to as ‘catfishing.’ If your child has been targeted by a scam online, and they have been made to do something that they didn’t want to, then they are not to blame, they are not in trouble, and support is available.

The children had lots to share during our assemblies and class sessions and we encourage you to continue the conversation at home about spotting, responding to, and reporting online scams. Here are some helpful resources:

A key part of protecting children and young people from online harm is through
preventative education. By talking about this in school and at home, we can all work towards keeping children safe when they are online. Celebrating Safer Internet Day is a great opportunity for you to re-emphasise the online safety messages we deliver throughout the year.

Volunteers Needed!

We have been having a really great year of competitive sport. So far, we have attended 7 USSP events, have 5 more upcoming in the next month and there will undoubtedly be more as we go into the summer term. We have only been able to go to the majority of these because our amazing parents have taken their children there, solving our first difficulty: arranging transport.

Finding adults to accompany the children to these events is a separate challenge and one which we hope you can help us with. We'd love to expand our bank of parent volunteers to include those who could accompany a sports trip. If you have the occasional afternoon free (particularly Fridays) and would be happy to help with these trips, we'd love to hear from you!

News from the Friends

Little Recyclers

Thank you so much for all those who donated to the Little Recyclers clothing collection. We had a clothing mountain to donate and are looking forward to finding out the final value.

Penny Wars

Penny Wars is our new inter-class competition. It will be running from the 25^th February to the 25^th March. All the details and rules are in the poster below – please share these with your child/children to get them ready for the competition. Start collecting your pennies now, this is sure to be a very exciting competition!

Quiz Night

The Rodings Quiz Night hosted by our quiz master extraordinaire, Mr Raraty will be held on the 14^th March. This is an adults only event so get that childcare organised now. You can get together and form a team of 10 or just book your tickets and will organise your team for you. Tickets will be on sale via Arbor after half term.

Easy Fundraising

If you are planning on booking a holiday (or doing any online shopping) please consider using Easy Fundraising for your bookings. Many holiday companies are part of Easy Fundraising, allowing you to donate to your school while booking your holiday.

To sign up go to www.easyfundraising.org.uk - download the app or sign up on your browser. When signing up please select “Friends of Rodings Primary School” (there are a couple of other Rodings schools!). Once you are signed up you can access websites through the app or if shopping in your browser Easy Fundraising will ask you if you want to donate, this doesn’t make any difference to the cost of your shopping but a percentage of anything you spend will go directly to the school.

This week at Forest School, as it's Valentines this week we were thinking about all the things that we love in the world. We talked about how at Forest School we love ourselves, we love each other and we love nature, and how each thing is so important for our wellbeing.

We hugged our special trees, made clay nature hearts and toasted heart- shaped toast on the fire!
